Grief:

I have not changed my thoughts about Chris's mental condition. He was just determined to live off the land and he did so. He is crazy to risk his life but he had been all along.
My reaction to his parents when they visited the bus was that I was surprised that his dad came around and was glad they went. I knew his mom would be glad to see where he had been. It was sad when she smelled his jeans and it smelled like him. I think it was good that they went and checked it out since they had no idea where he had been.

Chapters 16-18:

Chris was a little crazy. Risking his own life was crazy in its self. It was also dangerous for him to hitchhike with strangers. I think being alone for that long makes you go crazy to an extent.
He was ignorant. He should have educated himself more before leaving for the trip. He would not have know about the seeds because all he knew about were the roots. His lack of knowledge is what killed him.
He did not have a death wish. He went back to the river to go home and so that shows that he wanted to go home. He also had realized that he should forgive his family. Nothing showed that he wanted to die. He also wrote the note for help when he was ill.
The wild potato seeds are poison to eat.  The sweet peas seeds are toxic if eaten in large amounts. The symptoms if eaten are much like scurvy.  The symptoms of toxicity are called lathyrism.

Chapters 14 and 15:

The author talks about himself for two chapters to show that Chris was not crazy and was just living how he wanted. He was showing that there are other people who have done similar things.
I did not like his interjections. I thought that they were distracting from the plot.
My reaction was that it was interesting to know that the author knew what he was talking about because he had done something similar.
His life relates because they both did not get along with their parents and so they both went into the wild to find themselves.
I do not agree with Edwards I think climbing is a good activity and that it is not a psycho neurotic tendency. It can become one depending on who and how they choose to do it.
I don't think he is defending Chris. Chris is psycho neurotic because he risked his own life to go on the adventure.

Chapters 11-13:

Chris as a kid/teen was intense like his dad was. He was also very stubborn. He was always independent. He did well in school and was smart. He was antisocial. He loved to be outside and loved animals. He was focused at any task at hand and got it done timely. He was competitive.
As an adult he had many of the same characteristics. He was still just as stubborn. He was determined. He also still didn't fit into society very well much like Walt's father didn't.
The way he was as a teen were the same way he was in adult hood besides that he was not as competitive. He was less materialistic and more into nature.

I think I am about the same as I was as a kid. I am still as stubborn and will do what I think is best in my life. I have matured but I still have the same personality.

Chapters 8-10:

The function of these chapters is to show that Chris is not the only one who died from "living off the land". There are other guys who also found adventure but also died from it. They show that smart guys get these ideas and then make the mistake of taking their adventures too far.
The relationship these chapters have to the rest of the text is that they explain the way that society pushes people until they break and just want to get away and then they die from the choices of life style.

The author wrote about the story in chapters 8 and 9 to show that he was not the only one who lived that way. He compared stories of others that showed how Chris was not mentally ill but just wanted to live off the land. He did this to show the people who said that Chris was crazy that maybe he wasn't crazy but just did fit into the mold society expects everyone to be in.

I was not surprised that he left trails because he did have people who loved him and that he loved back and by leaving trails he knew that they would know that he was gone.  I think he also wanted them to know where he went to show that people should be nomatic. Leaving trails were his way to still be known in society in my opinion.

I think that a name shows who you are and where you come from. I think by keeping the name you were given is giving your respects to your family. I think it is okay to change your name because it is yours after all and if you want to change you should. My name fits me and I would not change it because I love my family and where  I came from.

Chapters 4-7:

People Chris met:
crazy Ernie( never paid Chris for work )
Jan Burres( boyfriend named Bob,gave Chris a ride, they became close and he kept in touch with her)
Duck Hunters( Dropped him in California)
Thomas and Karin ( German couple who gave him a ride)
Lori Zarza( was his boss at mcdonalds)
Charlie ( older man thar Chris lived with him for a while)
Tracy ( 17 year old who fell in love with Chris)
Ronald A. Franz ( 18 year old boy who loved Chris like his grandson)
Gail Borah ( westerberg's girlfriend- became close to Chris- they talked for hours)

What made an impression on people ( about Chris): He is smart which is what most people noticed but more than that people saw that in his life he lived out his beliefs and did not just say them. He also was a mystery which attracted people to him.

Journal: I think he avoided writing about himself in first person was because he wanted to look at his life from a distance to make sure he is telling his story and so it could be shared someday. I think he wanted to look at his life as an adventure so that was his way of writing a true story about himself. I also think it may have been so it didn't seem like he was bragging.

The purpose of chapter four was to show that he would let go of his material stuff ( like his car) to go on the adventure he was seeking. It also showed that what he was doing was a bit risky but it was what he wanted to do so he would do it.

Ronald Franz was a nice guy and was good to Chris. He taught Chris what he knew. He felt close to Chris. He had lost his family so he was lonely and Chris filled the holes in his life. He does have my sympathy because he was alone and he found a grandson in Chris so I felt bad for him when Chris left. I liked how he was kind enough to help Chris without being too pushy.

I learned that Chris hated his father and was very angry about his past. They were both stubborn. His dad wanted to control Chris when all Chris wanted was to be free and independent. They never took him seriously or really valued him for who he was so once he could be broke free and left them forever. I think his anger is justified because his dad tried to control him but I still think he could have been more respectful and perhaps tried to have a decent relationship instead of leaving.

Chapter 3:

Westerberg is a very nice guy and he does not try to ask Chris too many questions. He lives in South Dakota and he gave Chris a job there. He cared about Chris and they kept in touch when Chris left South Dakota. He has good character and I think  he is very good for Chris to have in his life. He was nice enough that Chris would tell people that he was from South Dakota after he worked for Westerberg.

McCandless was a nice guy but he was very private about his past and who he is. He has good character because he gave all of his money to charity when he left his home in D.C. He is a hard worker and he did his best at everything he did. I think I would liked to have met him because he is very unique and he was not into material things.
